OS/400 Alert: Windows XP Service Pack 2 Beta
June 2, 2004 Shannon O'Donnell
This issue of “OS/400 Alert” brings you up to date on defective IBM PTFs. Using the list provided, you can analyze your own PTF strategy to see if you need to apply patches or remove PTFs before they cause problems on your system. In addition, users of Microsoft Windows XP will want to read on to find out how they can take part in the Windows XP Service Pack 2 beta program.
WINDOWS XP SP2 BETA ALMOST READY
If you are one of those folks who like to be on the bleeding edge of new technology, and you are a Microsoft business partner, be sure to register for the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 beta. In Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft is providing an operating system that has tighter Internet security through its new built-in firewall technology, something users have been asking for ever since Windows XP came out. In addition to, or perhaps as part of the new firewall technology, Microsoft has developed a strategy that is supposed to keep your computer safe from viruses, even if you have not yet downloaded the latest hot-fix from Microsoft to prevent them. That sounds like a pretty good trick, if they can accomplish it. Of course, there are many more new features and fixes in Windows XP SP2, including reduced privileges for RPC service (a known hole for virus exploiters), a Web browser security pop-up manager, hardware-enforced data execution protection, and recompiling of core Windows components.
If you are a Microsoft business partner, you can register for the Windows XP Service Pack 2 beta on Microsoft’s Web site.
PTF ANALYSIS
As any programmer can attest, sometimes fixing one problem causes new problems. The same holds true with fixes issued by IBM. Many times a PTF is released only to be suddenly recalled or superseded days, or even hours, later. To save you the trouble of having to wade through the defective PTFs, and to give you a flavor for the kinds of things that can backfire, here is a list of interesting and possibly havoc-wreaking defective PTFs for V5R2 for the month of April. We are showing this to you just in case you have been ignoring the defective PTF listings from IBM. This is a bad idea if you are doing this.
