  • Eastern Bag Extends iSeries App with Voxware’s Voice-Directed Picking

    June 19, 2007 Alex Woodie

An iSeries shop in Massachusetts has successfully deployed Voxware‘s voice-directed picking solution, called VoiceLogistics, the company announced last week. As a result of the implementation, Eastern Bag & Paper Group was able to reduce errors and improve the efficiency of its warehouse operation.

Eastern Bag & Paper Group is a distributor that sells a line of 1,500 products, including tabletop disposables and small wares, packaging, decorations, party supplies, and cleaning solutions, to companies in nine states in the Northeast and New England region. The company operates its core back-end applications on the iSeries server, and was looking for a way to improve the interaction of its warehouse workers with the iSeries server.

The solution Eastern Bag found was VoiceLogistics, a voice-directed picking solution that uses speakers to communicate directions to the warehouse worker. With VoiceLogistics software installed on an LXE HX1 wearable computer, Eastern Bag’s warehouse workers can keep their hands free to pick products off the shelves and prepare it for shipping.

Jack Jurkowski, the CIO of Eastern Bag, says the Voxware solution increased the order picking accuracy and reduced the time required for warehouse workers to pick their orders. “An added bonus is that Voxware’s multiple language capability allows the worker to perform all aspects of their job using the language with which they are most comfortable,” he says. “From the IT perspective, Voxware interfaced easily with our enterprise IBM iSeries-based application, requiring a minimum of implementation time.”
