Former Microsoft COO Joins the Vision Solutions Board

High availability and disaster recovery software maker Vision Solutions has built itself into the dominant position in the System i market through acquisitions in the past year, thanks to private equity from Thoma Cressey Bravo. And having done that, the company’s owners and managers are trying to get the best minds to chart the company’s future. To that end, Vision Solutions was obviously quite pleased to announce last week that it has landed a well-known, top former executive from Microsoft, Bob Herbold, to its board of directors. Herbold is the perfect executive for just about any board of directors for any IT vendor. He spent 26 years at home products manufacturing giant Proctor and Gamble, eventually rising to the position of senior vice president of advertising and information services. Yes, that made him responsible for both the P&G brand and its information systems, and those are two very different jobs. He joined Microsoft in 1994 and spent seven years as the company’s chief operating officer until her retired in February 2001. (Herbold was replaced by former Hewlett-Packard top executive Rick Belluzzo, who has held short-lived top positions at Silicon Graphics and Microsoft before landing the chief executive position at Quantum in 2002.) “Bob is a widely respected executive and his broad experience and relationships with high profile companies will add great insight to our team,” explained Nicolaas Vlok, president and CEO of Vision Solutions in a statement. “We are very excited to have attracted a board member of his caliber. With his wealth of operational expertise, he will prove invaluable as we enter our next phase of growth and address new challenges.” Herbold is the author of two popular management books, Seduced by Success: How the Best Companies Survive the 9 Traps of Winning and The Fiefdom Syndrome, and established his own consulting business, called the Herbold Group.
