What is better than free money? (Keep it clean here, people. This is a family newsletter.) Very few things, and one of them is free speech and the other is free beer; I even like free puppies. But few things beat free money, and high availability software maker Maxava is giving away $50,000 in grants to the IBM i community. But you only have until June 30 to submit a grant application, so hop to it. Maxava launched the iFoundation effort back in late March to help carry the cost of local and national user group meetings, education and training, and projects undertaken by ISVs. While the company is obviously keen on promoting disaster recovery and high availability within the IBM i community–sensible given that Maxava sells HA and DR software and only in that community–the iFoundation grants are not restricted to these areas. The idea is to support the groups and organizations that in turn promote the IBM i platform. “Maxava is exclusively focused on the IBM i and is therefore very committed to the continuing success of the platform,” said Allan Campbell, CEO of Maxava, in a statement last week. “One of our main goals of the iFoundation is to encourage momentum and help the IBM i community continue to move forward. If the IBM i can regain momentum, it will certainly ensure enhanced prospects and security for the ISVs, customers, and technical professionals that have, and will, build their businesses, environments, and careers in the 400 bloodline.” Annual iFoundation grants range as high as $2,000 a pop. You can apply here. The $50,000 pool will be divvied up over the next 12 months. Maxava will award the grants within four weeks and cut the check within four weeks of notification. You cannot use the grants for any personal expenses or for any transactions or costs that you have already incurred. This is for forward-looking stuff only.
