DSI Targets IBM i Shops with VTL Solutions

Dynamic Solutions International (DSI) last month announced that it’s targeting IBM i shops with its line of virtual tape libraries (VTLs). DSI entered the midrange radar in December when the Englewood, Colorado, company unfurled a partnership with IBM i juggernaut HelpSystems. As part of the deal, the companies planned to integrate their respective products, and jointly sell an integrated backup solution to IBM i shops. DSI’s May announcement of the new VTL solutions for IBM i shops signals that the company is ready to get down to business. That business, of course, is replacing tape drives at IBM i shops. “Until now, there have been very few options for iSeries users interested in making the move from physical tape backups to faster, more reliable VTL backups,” Leo Salvaggio, vice president of sales at DSI, said in a press release. DSI sells three VTL product lines, including the entry-level, midrange, and enterprise lines. In the entry-level space, there is the DSI350-VEM, which features up to 8 TB of usable disk capacity and four 8Gb Fibre Channel ports. A midrange offering is the DSI350-MEM, which features up to 16 TB of usable disk capacity and four FC ports. In the enterprise space, there’s the DSI350-EV0, which features 12 FC ports that connect to customer-supplied storage. All of the devices include enterprise features like hot standby disks, replication, encryption, and compression. DSI touted its first IBM i customer win at the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod, a 94-year-old financial firm that serves individuals and businesses from the Hyannis, Massachusetts, area. Jason Bordun, the bank’s vice president and information systems manager, says the bank has been looking to move to a VTL for some time, but couldn’t find a suitable solution until DSI came along. “Our new VTL system saved us time from day-one because it runs automatically rather than requiring someone to run manual data backups every day,” Bordun says in a press release. “We all feel a sense of relief knowing we now have a data storage solution in place that helps us meet compliance standards and will help us recover our data in the event of a disaster.” RELATED STORY Help/Systems Teams with DSI to Sell VTLs
