You’ve probably heard the saying “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.” Personally, I don’t think many people would find that to be a true statement, but then again, there is something to be said for keeping your name in the news cycle. Speaking of which, IBM has had a busy week with a mix of good and bad stories to keep Big Blue in the public eye. Continuing to push its AI initiatives, IBM has named 40 women as leaders in the field (good), but at the other end of the spectrum is a plan for massive layoffs (bad). (IBM) IBM has recognized 40 women business pioneers from 15 countries at the inaugural AI Women Leadership. The list recognizes women across a variety of industries and geographies for pioneering the use of AI to advance their companies in areas such as innovation, growth, and transformation.
(WAFB) In an effort to meet a job quota before its June deadline, IBM is launching its apprenticeship program at its Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in order to receive funding from the state.
(Fortune) IBM chief executive Ginni Rometty calls for education training for “new collar” jobs, a play on the term “blue collar,” to enable more people to make a good living without needing a traditional four-year degree.
(Yahoo Finance) All of the news out of IBM isn’t good. IBM has come up with a restructuring plan to terminate around 1,700 employees from several of its units in different locations.

June 20 – Webinar – Watch Simon Hutchinson of rpgpgm.com explain how SQL views can make it easy for your business users to understand and work with your DB2 on i data. There will also be a demonstration of NGS-IQ query, reporting, and analytics can take advantage of SQL views to produce Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, web reports, and multi-dimensional models.
