IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 21, Number 25

First of all, Happy 31st Birthday to the AS/400, which had its anniversary on June 21 when, absolutely not coincidentally, Big Blue shipped the latest and greatest IBM i 7.4 release of its operating system for the Power Systems platform. We have all been eagerly awaiting this new release because of the many new features it has, and we are just beginning to sink our teeth into it.

For your reference, I upgraded a system running IBM i 7.3 to IBM i 7.4 as soon as the new release was available, and just so you know, all the Java licensed programs and all the Websphere Development Server programs went into error. I had to remove them and reload them in order to get them to work. So IBM i 7.4 may be here, but maybe it is not quite ready for prime time yet. . . .

And now, let’s talk about the wave of security bulletins.

Security Bulletin: IBM i is affected by networking BIND vulnerability CVE-2018-5743. The IBM i PTF numbers are:

Release 7.1 – SI69882
Release 7.2 – SI69883
Release 7.3 – SI69885
Release 7.4 – SI69886

Security Bulletin: Vulnerability CVE-2019-3880 in Samba affects IBM i. The IBM i PTF numbers are:

Release 7.2 – SI69591
Release 7.3 – SI69592
Release 7.4 – SI69593

Security Bulletin: Vulnerabilities CVE-2019-0196, CVE-2019-0197, and CVE-2019-0220 in the IBM i HTTP Server affect IBM i. The IBM i PTF numbers are:

Release 7.2 – SI69901
Release 7.3 – SI69900 and SI69828
Release 7.4 – SI69187 and SI69189

Security Bulletin: IBM i is affected by networking BIND vulnerabilities CVE-2018-5744 CVE-2019-6465 and CVE-2018-5745. The IBM i PTF numbers are:

Release 7.4 – SI69622

And also a tip: IBM i 7.4 is only supported on Power8 and Power9 processors, and can only by upgraded directly from IBM i 7.2 or IBM i 7.3. Be sure you are using ACS for your console before upgrading.
