Four Hundred Monitor, June 17

In celebration of Father’s Day, which was yesterday in the U.S., Forbes magazine posted an article with life lessons from five billionaires dads. Aside from the fact that most of us aren’t billionaires, we all have dads in our lives — whether it be your own father, or you are a father, or your spouse or friends are fathers, you probably don’t have to look far to find someone who is doing their best to be a good dad — and it seemed like a good thing to share since the advice could be useful in business and family matters. …

You’ve probably heard the saying “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.” Personally, I don’t think many people would find that to be a true statement, but then again, there is something to be said for keeping your name in the news cycle. Speaking of which, IBM has had a busy week with a mix of good and bad stories to keep Big Blue in the public eye. Continuing to push its AI initiatives, IBM has named 40 women as leaders in the field (good), but at the other end of the spectrum is a plan for massive layoffs (bad). …

Four Hundred Monitor is intended to be a quick roundup of news and a resource for happenings in and around our IBM i ecosystem and the IT world in general. Our community may be just a small part of the big picture, but we are mighty when we come together. Take the recent POWERUp19 conference that just happened in Anaheim, California. The IT Jungle team was there mingling with exhibitors, presenters, and attendees, and it was a wonderful reminder of the energy surrounding our platform. Keep an eye on IT Jungle in the coming weeks for more news from the …

Unless you are living under a rock (ha, ha), you probably have some concern about the planet and preserving it for future generations. Maybe you have a composter, or drive an electric car, or you recycle. Whatever your contribution might be, I like to think it helps. And it is nice to see that the planet is also on the radar of tech giants like IBM and Dell Computers, both of which have recently joined a challenge to make a commitment to sustainability. Find out more in our top stories below, and don’t forget to visit our calendar at the …

If you are an IBM employee thinking of leaving your job, IBM probably knew about it before you did. Big Blue has been using AI as an employee retention tool and can predict with 95 percent accuracy which employees are likely to leave, CEO Ginni Rometty said in a recent interview. A little scary in the wrong hands, but if used effectively could mean a happier, more satisfied workforce, and cost savings in seeking and training new employees. You can see Rometty’s whole interview at the first link below, and then continue on to catch up on the rest of …

“You see golf. We see data.” I probably won’t be watching, but golf fans know the Masters kicks off this week in Georgia, and tech fans will be interested in seeing how IBM’s Watson keeps the tournament running smoothly. Of course, I wish I could tell you the IBM i was prominently featured, but it is always good to see IBM getting in front of 13 million television viewers, if the 2019 Masters lives up to last year’s numbers. You can see IBM’s slick website for the Masters at the first link below, and continue on from there for the …

It was nice to see some of our IBM i community getting into the April 1 spirit this week, even if it did make the job of finding news of the week tricky for me. I almost fell for Profound Logic’s “rebrand” into Profound Logistics, and I enjoyed seeing the iTech Solutions new superhero work uniforms. There was some real news this week as well, which we have gathered and summarized for you in true Four Hundred Monitor fashion. Read on to find out what’s up in the IT world, and don’t forget to check the calendar for upcoming webinars …

I think we’re all pretty tired of being lectured about security. I mean, there can’t be anyone left who doesn’t understand the importance of protecting data from all of the virtual predators who are out to steal and exploit it. And yet, week after week, the news headlines continue to be dominated by security breaches, sometimes perpetrated by hackers and sometimes by stupidity. This week we take a look at just a few of the recent security headlines in our top stories, but we leave it to you to make sure you’re doing everything you can to protect your data …

Did you know today, March 20, is considered the first day of spring? At least in the Northern Hemisphere it is. Also known as the spring equinox, today the length of the day is nearly equal in all parts of the world. While those of us on the Northern side of the globe start to enjoy longer, sunnier days, we can all enjoy the latest news from in and around our IBM i ecosystem. Be sure to check out our calendar at the bottom section for travel opportunities – a trip to COMMON in Southern California sounds like a great …
