LogLogic Boosts Performance of Log Devices
February 23, 2010 Alex Woodie
LogLogic last week unveiled a series of more powerful log management devices that collect and organize log data pulled from i/OS and other platforms. With the addition of Intel quad-core processors, bigger and faster disks, more and faster memory, and faster network connectivity, LogLogic says its hardened Linux-based appliances can ingest log data from enterprise IT resources twice as fast as previous generation devices. LogLogic sells three main families of X64-powered appliances, each tailored for specific workloads. The top-of-the-line, tactically oriented LX series is designed to alert customers in near real time of violations of corporate policies that could jeopardize regulatory compliance or security. The appliance can generate reports that allow administrators to track how users and other applications access resources–even across different platforms and geographic locations–all the way down to the file level. The mid-priced ST series functions as a long-term archive of log data for after-the-fact forensic analysis. The MX series combines features of both the LX and ST series, and, as the least expensive device, is LogLogic’s entry-level offering for small and medium sized businesses. (Specialized appliances for security, database, and compliance are also available.) LogLogic says the addition of Intel quad-core processors and 400 percent boosts in storage and memory in its new LX1020 and LX4020 devices enable them to consume an average of 10,000 log records per second, a 2.5x performance boost from older LX models. In some cases, the LX series can slurp up records at the rate of 130,000 per second. The new ST2020 and the ST4020, which got a new Qlogic Fibre Channel card in addition to quad-core processors from Intel, can now consume records at an average rate of 150,000 per second, a 2x improvement. Its peak rate is now listed as 250,000, the vendor says. LogLogic also announced the new MX3020 appliance, as well as version 4.9 of the pre-loaded LogLogic software. Pricing for the LX series starts at $60,000, at $50,000 for the ST series, and $35,000 for the MX series. See www.loglogic.com for more info.
