So Long ASNA–It’s BluePhoenix System i Division From Now On

ASNA, one of the oldest names in the AS/400 independent software vendor community, is about to disappear. Just the name, mind you, not the company or its products and services. As of May 1, ASNA officially becomes the System i Division of its parent company BluePhoenix Solutions. According to Greg Schottland, whose title changes from president of ASNA to vice president and general manager of the BluePhoenix System i Division, nothing else changes. In an e-mail, Schottland says, “Our business is strong and–as a result of the merger with BluePhoenix–our reach is greater than ever.” He also says the new BluePhoenix System i Division continues to invest and innovate. This summer the company plans to launch support for an RPG-to-C# code conversion service. BluePhoenix purchased ASNA in August 2007. At that time, the BluePhoenix software business was entirely focused on the IBM mainframe market. However, the application modernization goals of the two companies were very similar. ASNA, which was short for Amalgamated Software of North America, developed visual programming and systems software for IBMAS/400, iSeries, System i, and Power Systems servers. Its product list includes ASNA Visual RPG (AVR) for .NET, an RPG compiler for building Web services and broader service oriented architecture applications; DataGate, for System i database access from Windows and .NET applications; and Monarch, a tool that automates the transformation of RPG programs or entire applications to Microsoft,’s .NET programming model for Windows. The BluePhoenix application portfolio includes IT Discovery, a product for tracking system inventories, resources, and interrelationships; LogicMiner, a COBOL business logic analysis tool; AppBuilder, an application development infrastructure and tool used to build, deploy, and maintain applications and generate code for COBOL, Java/J2EE, and C#; and Nebula, an application repository that spans platform boundaries and development tools. Central to its BluePhoenix’s business is the application and database migration package that includes assessment and project impact analysis. BluePhoenix also offers platform migration and re-hosting services with an emphasis on J2EE, .NET, Linux, and Unix destinations.
