  • DataMirror Updates Transformation Server/ES

    May 1, 2007 Alex Woodie

DataMirror last week launched a new release of Transformation Server Event Server (TS/ES), a special version of its data replication software designed to work with message queues used in enterprise application integration (EAI) and service oriented architecture (SOA) environments.

DataMirror’s popular Transformation Server software has traditionally been used for extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL-ing) massive amounts of data from one relational database to another. In most cases, Transformation Server users are moving data from production DB2/400, DB2 UDB, Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase, or Teradata databases running on i5/OS, Windows, Unix, or Linux servers to a secondary database used for data warehousing, for real-time reporting or for keeping e-commerce Web apps synchronized with the production systems.

With TS/ES, which was launched in September 2005, DataMirror has taken Transformation Server’s core changed data capture (CDC) functionality and applied it in a slightly different way. Instead of moving data from a database to another database, TS/ES takes the data from the production database, loads it into its embedded Java database, and then transforms it into the native formats used by the message queues of various EAI products, Enterprise Service Busses (ESBs) business performance management (BPM) products, or other applications that use SOA techniques to monitor and react to changing events. In this case, TS/ES is the engine driving data into real-time information systems and dashboards used by senior financial and accounting executives to make strategic decisions, while delivering better performance than using database triggers or performing queries.

With the new version of TS/ES, DataMirror has tweaked the product to process high-volume, third-party message structures directly from queues, and to parse and embed that data without programming into relational database formats.

The new product release, which was not further identified but comes on the heels of therelease of Transformation Server 6.0, also received enhancements to its GUI. With this release, the GUI requires little or no programming to use. Any DataMirror or third-party XML objects can now be taken from the message queue and applied directly to applications or databases, the company says.

“Companies can now fully integrate business data with any database or application,” said Lucian Mustatea, vice president of development for DataMirror, which is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario. “They can leverage their existing investments in databases and message architectures to unlock new business opportunities.”
