  • Maintec Launches ‘Graveyard Shift’ Outsourcing Service

    June 7, 2011 Alex Woodie

Here’s a fun little fact: When it’s night in the United States, it’s daytime in India. Maintec Technologies, which runs a server outsourcing operation in Bangalore, India, is using this discrepancy in the distribution of photons to launch its new Graveyard Shift Service. Under the new service, Maintec will monitor and manage the critical IBM i, z/OS, and AIX servers of American companies during tough-to-fill shifts, including the graveyard shift, holidays, and weekends.

The global economic downturn has forced many companies to make due with less. For those running the data centers of mid-sized and large companies, that means leaner IT staffs, condensed project timelines, and a general atmosphere that demands employees to be more productive.

But according to Maintec, recession-led cutbacks are having a particularly large impact on certain shifts, including the night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Keeping the data center fully staffed during the off hours is a pipe dream for many companies, Maintec says. Besides, with the advent of advanced mobile interfaces for systems management tools, your lead administrator should be ready to react to unforeseen problems at all hours of the day–job-related-stress be damned.

For Maintec, a Raleigh, North Carolina, company that makes its money by offering Western companies cheaper IT talent from Bangalore, it’s a new twist on an old game. “Outsourcing graveyard shift operations to Maintec opens up access to a large pool of highly qualified and skilled mainframe professionals who handle data center operations during the U.S. night shift, a time that happens to be the day shift in India,” says Sonny Gupta, founder, president, and CEO of Maintec.

Gupta created Maintec in 1998 to handle Y2K conversions, and today specializes in remote staffing, development, and maintenance, primarily for IBM mainframe solutions, but also for IBM i and AIX systems.

On the IBM i system, Maintec offers an array of services, including: daily management and backup; system upgrades and PTFs; installation and system configuration; performing remote system IPLs; installing HMCs; capacity planning; managing MQ Series and security; managing DB2 environments, including distributed databases; and managing high availability and mirrored environments.
