Attachmate last week unveiled Reflection for the Web 2011 R1, a new release of its Web-based terminal emulation solution for accessing legacy applications on a variety of host platforms. Reflection for the Web 2011 R1 brings several new capabilities to the Web browser, including a new programmatic framework that Attachmate says simplifies the automation of complex business processes, and the capability to record and edit macros and other automations using JavaScript. This release also brings support for the latest Web browsers, including Internet Explorer 9, Safari 5, and Google Chrome. End users will also benefit from a new file transfer interface that should simplify the use of FTP. Users and administrators also get a new configurable toolbar that can be customized. Server-side enhancements include a native installer that should speed implementations on Windows and Linux 64-bit server platforms, and provide better scalability. Setting up LDAP authentication should also be easier, the company says. The enhancements in Reflection for the Web 2011 R1 should help save customers money, says Attachmate’s product marketing manager Kris Lall. “Even though many of today’s organizations are better positioned to spend money on host technology, they are still being challenged with doing more with less and leveraging cost-effective solutions to provide users with secure access to critical applications,” Lall says in a press release. Reflection is one of three families of terminal emulation software offered by Attachmate. While its EXTRA! line of emulators is most often used by Attachmate’s IBM i customers, and the Reflection line (obtained with its acquisition of WRQ) sees more use in Unix environments, the Reflection products do contain 5250 emulation capabilities.
