IBM Shuffles the TM1 Deck

IBM has been busy with TM1, the 64-bit in-memory business intelligence software product that it obtained with its Cognos acquisition. The company announced it will kill a mid-market version of the TM1 product this fall, while it simultaneously releases version 9.5.1 of the product. On June 8, IBM announced that as of September, it would no longer market the “mid market starter edition” of IBM Cognos TM1, product number 5724-W49. Instead, customers will only be able to order the enterprise-strength version of the full Cognos Analytic tools under the Cognos TM1 name (which goes by the same product number). From the TM1 withdrawal announcement , it appears that IBM will still sell TM1 product number 5729-W49, but customers will get the enterprise-level Cognos Analytic products instead. This makes sense only when one considers that IBM last year launched a different version of TM1 aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. Cognos Express, as that product is called, features the 64-bit in-memory TM1 database surrounded by a variety of Cognos reporting tools. Last week, IBM announced a new release of TM1. Version 9.8.1 gets new features in the areas of writebacks, job queue processing, server loading times, Cognos connectors, and support for the latest Microsoft operating systems, Web servers, and Web browsers. While the TM1 software runs on Windows, in some cases it can be a good fit for System i shops storing data in DB2/400. RELATED STORY IBM Targets Mid Market with Cognos Express
