Quadrant Supports i 6.1 with FastFax
June 24, 2008 Alex Woodie
Quadrant Software last week announced a new release of its FastFax software, version 4.7.4, which brings support for i 6.1 (formerly i5/OS V6R1), among other new features, such as improved support for IBM Domino and Microsoft Exchange e-mail servers, easier configuration, and faster recovery from network outages. Quadrant’s FastFax suite of products enable users to distribute i5/OS spool file output as either a fax or an e-mail, and also allows users to receive faxes and manage them from their favorite e-mail environment. The offering includes a “black box” fax processor that hooks fax cards into the network (fax workloads are not suited for System i iron), and software interfaces that support all manners of i5/OS, Windows, and NetWare clients; Domino, Exchange, and GroupWise e-mail servers; and connectors for popular i5/OS ERP products, including JD Edwards, BPCS, MAPICS, and others. Support for the latest release of the i operating system (OS) leads off the list of new features with FastFax version 4.7.4. Like all ISVs, Quadrant needed to go through the program conversion process to ensure that its software runs on i 6.1. FastFax 4.7.4 also supports the latest Domino 8 release, enabling the software to run on 64-bit Windows Server operating systems, as well as Domino Cluster configurations. The change was necessary to connect FastFax to a clustered Domino system when the Domino server is in a different domain than the FastFax fax processor, Quadrant says. FastFax customers will find the upgrade to Exchange Server 2007 is easier with version 4.7.4. Quadrant’s Email Gateway for Exchange 2007 now comes with an automated installation and update tool, which Quadrant says allows users to upgrade their gateway “with the click of a button.” Initial setup of the FastFax system should go quicker thanks to the enhancement of the Extractor utility. Extractor is used to specify which fields on i OS spool files (name, fax number, e-mail address, customer number) should be monitored to determine how FastFax should be distributed. With version 4.7.4, Extractor now supports the use of wildcards in the Extractor templates, which makes it easier to monitor multiple output queues for spool files. FastFax can simultaneously monitor up to 20 output queues with this release, Quadrant says. Getting FastFax back online after a T1 outage (most FastFax customers use beefy T1 communication lines) will be easier with version 4.7.4, thanks to new facilities that enable the software to be ready to go the minute the T1 comes back online, without any manual intervention. FastFax 4.7.4 is available now. More product information can be found at www.quadrantsoftware.com.
