SunGard Launches Recover2Cloud

SunGard last week unveiled a new managed cloud-based DR service called Recover2Cloud that supports IBM i and other platforms. The new offering provides SunGard customers an Internet-based connection to the company’s data center resources, as well as access to SunGard experts. SunGard is offering two options with Recover2Cloud. The first is Recover2Cloud for Vaulting, which offers a guaranteed recovery time objective (RTO) of less than 24 hours. The second is Recover2Cloud for Server Replication, which offers a guaranteed RTO of less than four hours. Recover2Cloud for Vaulting supports IBM i and other major operating systems, while Recover2Cloud for Server Replication is only available for Windows and Linux operating systems at this time. Recover2Cloud for Vaulting uses data vaulting technology from i365 to move backups to SunGard’s DR data centers. The deal is based on i365’s EVault Remote Disaster Recovery (RDR) service, a managed data recovery service launched three years ago that enables i365 customers using the EVault software to push server backups over the Internet to utilize the data center resources of i365 (a Seagate subsidiary) to recover their data. EVault RDR initially just supported Windows, but was expanded a year ago to support IBM i, AIX, Linux, and VMware. Customers tapping SunGard for cloud-based recovery will save more than 30 percent compared to the cost of building and managing their own solutions, SunGard says. The new Recover2Cloud gives customers choice, saysLarry Coble, who holds the title of senior vice president and general manager of recovery services at SunGard Availability Services. “In the world of application availability, there is no one-size-fits-all solution,” he states in a press release. “Leveraging a cloud platform enables us to expand the recovery options we offer to our customers, both as standalone services and as part of tiered recovery solutions.” Later this year, SunGard plans to add a third Recover2Cloud component that uses storage virtualization technology.
