IBM Gives RDi 9.1.1 ‘Push to Client’ Feature
October 14, 2014 Alex Woodie
It will be easier for IBM i developers to share tool preferences with other members of their teams thanks to the new “push to client” feature that IBM announced last week with Rational Developer for i version 9.1.1. The new release of RDi becomes available in December. The new push to client capability in RDi 9.1.1 will allow a team of developers to share a set of standard preference and connection settings for the Eclipse-based development tool. According to IBM, a template that’s maintained on the server will enable developers to share a common set of preferences, connections, filters, and actions across their RDi environments. The feature allows development managers to pick one of two options for how the updates are distributed to their teams. They can either force the configuration to all RDi users or merely have it generate a prompt so that imports are done by choice. The other major new feature unveiled with RDi 9.1.1 has to do with debugging. With version 9.1.1, IBM is giving developers the capability to run “code coverage analysis” interactively through the Service Entry Point (SEP). An SEP, as Susan Gantner explained in a 2012 IT Jungle article, is “a breakpoint that will cause the program to stop when it is run in any job anywhere on the system by a specific user profile when the breakpoint is encountered.” IBM announced the new release of RDi (which was previously called RDp, WDSC, and RDi before that) October 6 as part of its fall refresh of the Power Systems lineup. The company also announced new IBM i Technology Refreshes, including IBM i 7.1 TR9 and IBM i 7.2 TR1. RDi 9.1.1 will be made available as a fixpack (not a new install) on December 12.
