Halcyon Adds VIOS Monitoring to AIX Systems Management Toolset

Halcyon Software last week announced that it’s shipping a new “lite” version of its Network Server Suite that brings the capability to monitor Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) on IBM Power Systems servers. The vendor also updated its full Network Server Suite, which is used to monitor AIX, Linux, and Windows environments. IBM introduced VIOS with the launch of IBM i 6.1 in 2008. The software virtualizes the disk and network adapters, and eliminates the requirement that IBM i LPARs have actual adapters dedicated to them. This not only reduced the number of physical adapters required in a Power Systems server, but enabled IBM i to run on a blade, as explained in Halcyon’s new “Guide to AIX VIOS Monitoring,” written by former IBM UK AS/400 product manager Nigel Adams, who is now a consultant for UK-based Halcyon. The downside to VIOS, Adams writes, is that it’s a bit foreign to those accustomed to IBM i, as it requires AIX skills to manage. The new lite version of Network Server Suite brings the capability to monitor VIOS and the LPAR it resides in. Halcyon says the new lite version has pre-defined templates to get customers up and running with VIOS monitoring and alerting. Network Server Suite version 9.0, meanwhile, brings new troubleshooting capabilities designed to help AIX and Linux specialists diagnose problems faster. When problems arise, the Halcyon software displays an “instant overview” of the system, including any bottlenecks and failed log ons, which could indicate potential hacking attacks. “It will also allow organizations to embed existing AIX and Linux skills into a point and click solution that can be used by IT administrators to manage cross-platform IT environments and supplement the capabilities of key staff,” says Carole Chandler, sales and marketing director for Halcyon. It also brings a new disk utilization utility.
