IBM Updates Host Access Components with HIS 7.6
October 27, 2009 Alex Woodie
IBM last week announced a new release of Host Integration Solution (HIS), the amalgamation of various programming tools for modernizing and accessing applications running on IBM i OS, among other platforms. With HIS version 7.6, IBM has updated the package with the most current releases of its various components, some of which were also announced last week. HIS is a sprawling suite of products (actually, two suites of products) that IBM put together to serve the needs of large organizations that need Telnet access to a variety of hosts, along with modernization tools to enable the modernization to Web-based GUI interfaces. IBM offers HIS for 5250 Applications, which is aimed at i OS applications, along with HIS for Multiplatforms, which connects to Unix and z/OS servers. HIS for 5250 Applications version 7.6 consists of eight separate products. This includes:
HIS for Multiplatforms version 7.6 includes identical components, with the addition of Communications Server for Linux on System z V6.4. The bulk of the new functionality in both HIS suites reside in the new releases of Personal Communications and Host On-Demand, which we covered in a separate story in this newsletter on last week’s launch of Host Access Client Package for iSeries and Multiplatforms version 7 (see IBM Updates Host Access Client Emulator Packages). Besides the new Personal Communications and Host On-Demand emulators, there’s not a whole lot of new stuff in HIS for 5250 version 7.6. RDi for SOA version 7.5 and HATS 7.5 have each been out for over a year, while WebSphere Application Server – Express version 7.0 shipped in September 2008.
