AquaFold Power Tool Gets Hip to Big Data

Programmers and administrators faced with big data movement tasks may find the job a little easier with the latest release of AquaFold Aqua Data Studio, a power tool that provides graphical access to major databases, including DB2/400. Aqua Data Studio is a Java-based utility designed to provide programmers, database developers, and systems administrators with a single, consistent interface to work with databases. The product’s GUI lets users administer, explore, and query their databases and create SQL scripts. Additionally, it offers an entity relationship modeler; brings comparison tools for analyzing differences in files, directory structures, and database schemas; and has an import/export tool. With Aqua Data Studio version 12, the Sunnyvale, California, company has added new features aimed at improving the product’s capability to work with big datasets. To this end, version 12 features a new component called FluidShell, a new command line environment that allows users to quickly enter commands or write scripts to automate tasks related to data warehousing, such as extract, transform, and load (ETL) workloads. AquaFold also claims a general speed improvement on the order of 8x when accessing large databases. This additional performance is the result of new connection-pooling features, among other enhancements, says AquaFold CEO Niels Gron. “This release is about lightning-fast performance, particularly for big data,” Gron says. “Enterprises are growing their data warehouses exponentially and they are demanding tools that offer speed and cost-cutting automation to stay competitive globally.” Aqua Data Studio licenses start at $499, $100 more than when we last covered the product a year ago.
