OpenLegacy Expands Big Data Partnerships
September 16, 2020 Alex Woodie
Over the past few months, OpenLegacy has established new partnerships with a handful of tech firms patrolling the big data waters, including Talend, Collibra, and BigID. According to the legacy application modernization specialist, it’s all part of an effort to help its IBM i and mainframe customers upgrade their applications and experiences.
OpenLegacy is unique among IBM i modernization vendors in its approach. The company’s software allows customers to expose legacy applications, such as those written in RPG, via APIs and Web services.
Now the company is bringing several partners into that API-driven approach. For instance, its partnership with Talend …

Four Hundred Monitor, September 16
September 16, 2020 Jenny Thomas
Virtual POWERUp 2020 is happening this week, the first time ever being completely online, and possibly the first time ever attending an online conference for many of you. Personally, I like the travel and seeing people in person, plus who doesn’t like the happy hours in the exhibit hall? But we are all learning to adapt and it seems almost fitting that COMMON is celebrating a “quarantine” birthday as so many of us have done this year. At 60 years young, COMMON has quite a legacy of serving the members of this community with education and resources to enhance their …

Four Hundred Monitor, August 19
August 19, 2020 Jenny Thomas
IT Jungle created Monitor as a place to round up news relevant to our IBM i ecosystem, or that we just think might be of interest to our readers. But as a leader in IBM i news, sometimes our stories are the ones we just don’t think you can miss. This week, two of our articles are featured in the top five. We were simpatico with the hot topics of the week – the launch of Power10 and digital transformation – and you’ll find our coverage of both topics in the top stories below, plus a look at what’s happening …

Kisco Extends Two Factor Authentication To Green Screens
July 27, 2020 Alex Woodie
Companies that still rely on 5250 greenscreens to get work done can now lock down those sessions with a new two-factor authentication feature recently delivered in Kisco Information Systems’ i2Pass offering. The New York company is also giving customers of its iEventMonitor solution new capabilities to automatically respond to error messages in a remote fashion.
Green screens, if you haven’t noticed, are not going away. Despite the ubiquity of Web and mobile interfaces for new development, there’s a large number of applications that require users to log into a 5250 terminal emulation session to get the job done. For companies …

Four Hundred Monitor, June 15

We survived another week, which in 2020 is probably something to celebrate. And it appears our industry is beginning to wake up as we are starting to see a little more news that isn’t directly related to COVID-19, although it will be some time before the pandemic is out of the conversation and its impact has forever changes the way we will do many things. Travel is still not on the radar for most, but it will be interesting to see what the summer brings. In the meantime, the online game is strong so be sure to check out what’s …

What’s Behind Syncsort’s Rebranding As Precisely?
June 1, 2020 Alex Woodie
Syncsort, the company that merged with Vision Solutions three years ago and acquired several IBM i security firms, has changed its name to Precisely. According to chief executive officer Josh Rogers, the new name is a better reflection of what the company has become following its acquisition of Pitney Bowes’ data and software business: laser-focused on data integrity.
The name change has been a long time in coming, according to Rogers, who took the helm at Syncsort in 2016. While the Syncsort brand has been around for 50 years, the company’s focus has shifted considerably from the early …

Four Hundred Monitor, May 27
May 27, 2020 Jenny Thomas
With the passing of the Memorial Day holiday in America last weekend, observed to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military, the summer season is officially underway. Of course, it looks a lot different this year, with many businesses still shuttered and workers making plans for re-openings instead of vacations. The news continues to reflect the havoc caused by the coronavirus, as we see IBM slashing jobs as companies continue to look for ways to stay connected to employees and customers. With any luck, the warmer weather will bring better news, computing- and coronavirus-wise, …

Four Hundred Monitor, May 20

Depending on where you reside, you may be seeing some changes in the stay-at-home order most of us have been living under since March. In some parts of the U.S., restaurants and gyms have re-opened, while in other places, like here in southern California, we only just allowed back to our beaches (surfers and walkers only, no sitting on the sand) and all while under cover of masks. What does seem to be more common is the desire to get back underway again, with many businesses doing whatever is necessary to adapt and open their doors in some fashion. Hopefully …

Guru: RDi V9.6, Part 8 – Better Ways To Copy Members, Manage LIBLs, and Find Preferences
May 18, 2020 Susan Gantner
If my crystal ball had told me just how many RDi V9.6 fix packs there would be and, more importantly, how many great new features would be added, I might have thought differently about starting a numbered series! Looks like I may well make it into double digits. But I’m not complaining. RDi has always been a great tool, and the pace of significant new functionality added since late 2017, when V9.6 first appeared, has reached new heights.
This tip covers some of the features added in V9.6.0.7. Yes, I still have some catching up to do since 9.6.0.8 recently …

Four Hundred Monitor, May 13

I thought it might be nice this week to scour the headlines for some non-COVID-19 related stories as a bit of a respite from the ongoing pandemic. That didn’t work out so well, despite the fact that many states are beginning to slowly allow businesses to open back up and restrictions are starting to ease. This week is a little different, though, as much of the news is about how businesses are adapting, and we are seeing many changes in the Calendar as organizations bring their events online, postpone, or even cancel. The day has not yet come where the …
