CHAIN vs SELECT INTO
August 2, 2016 Chuck Luttor
The average RPG developer can quickly become proficient in replacing RPG database operation codes with their SQL equivalents when undertaking new programming. In each installment of this series, I will visit an op code or set of op codes in order to prove my contention. First up today is CHAIN.
I remember the CHAIN op code from System/3 Model 6 and Model 10 disk days. (Yes, I have been around for a long, long time.) It has been used extensively by every RPG programmer since then. It is the basic op code for random access. In the “old days” it

Kisco Rolls with 2FA, Revs Network Security Tool
May 20, 2015 Alex Woodie
Data security isn’t just nice to have–it’s the law in most industries. One of the best ways to keep unauthorized users from snooping where their snouts don’t belong is two-factor authentication (2FA), which requires users to have two pieces of identifying credentials before being granted entry. A new 2FA solution for IBM i was launched recently by Kisco Information Systems, which also updated its exit point monitoring program for IBM i.
Kisco’s 2FA solution, called i2Pass, puts a roadblock in front of attempts to access IBM i assets. If the users have the correct credentials–which is the combination of

Surround Tech Revs Windows-Based Dev Tool for IBM i
May 20, 2014 Alex Woodie
Surround Technologies is now shipping version 5 of Accelerator for .NET, a Microsoft Visual Studio-based development environment for creating graphical, database-powered apps to run on IBM i and other platforms. With version 5, the development process is smoother and faster, the company says.
Accelerator for .NET includes a set of prebuilt components and wizard-driven code generators that plug into Microsoft‘s Visual Studio development environment. The software enables developers to build three-tier apps that run on IBM i and use its integrated DB2 for i database and use Microsoft’s UI technologies, such as Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Silverlight, to

SafeNet Claims Usage-Based Licensing Breakthrough For On-Premise ISVs
July 30, 2013 Alex Woodie
For the last several years, the software licensing experts at SafeNet have helped software as a service (SaaS) vendors sell their stuff based on what features their customers use and how often they use them. With a recent update to its Sentinel Cloud license management and software monetization offering for software publishers, SafeNet says it can now provide on-premise software vendors with access to the same usage-based licensing and pricing capabilities as their SaaS cohorts have enjoyed.
Sentinel Cloud was originally developed for SaaS vendors, but the need for a usage-based pricing model for ISVs who sell on-premise software was

Brooks Revs RPM to Bolster Production Printing
July 16, 2013 Alex Woodie
Organizations that print files through the latest release of Brooks Internet Software‘s Remote Print Manager (RPM) will benefit from higher load tolerances, more detailed logging, better scheduling, and the capability to allow third-party apps to control RPM processing and configuration, the Idaho Falls, Idaho, company announced this month.
RPM is a Line Printer Daemon (LPD) print server that provides flexibility in the management and handling of the print output of IBM i, mainframe, HP3000, OpenVMS, Unix, and Linux servers. The Windows-based software is commonly used to convert print output from native formats, such as SCS or AFPDS, to more

Database Modernization: A Matter of Survival for IBM i ISVs
October 18, 2012 Alex Woodie
In the discussion of database modernization, the question inevitably comes up: What are IBM i independent software vendors (ISVs) doing to modernize their databases? The answer, according to database modernization experts at Databorough, Resolution Software, and TEMBO, is they aren’t doing much. The vast majority of IBM i ISVs continue to use traditional DDS and ISAM database technology and aren’t moving quickly to modern SQL and DDL. Eventually the ISVs will need to invest in database modernization if they want to keep the applications relevant in an SQL world.
Database modernization has been on the technology docket

Infinite’s Migration Plan Targets IBM i ISVs
May 7, 2012 Dan Burger
Infinite Corporation, a company that specializes in migrating OS/400 and IBM i applications to Windows, Unix, and Linux platforms, has targeted IBM i ISVs with a migration plan that the company says has proved to be successful in Argentina.
The migration plan provides the tools to move RPG or COBOL applications written for the AS/400 or System/36 environment to Microsoft Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Enterprise Linux (its RHEL clone) and Solaris (its Unix), and IBM AIX. Infinite’s CEO Bruce Acacio says approximately 60 ISVs in Argentina have gone through the migration process and that success led
