IBM Chops Disk Prices For Storwize V7000 And Flex System Clone

If you have not yet gotten the message that IBM wants enterprise customers running distributed applications to give serious consideration to using its FlexSystem iron, a price cut announced last week will demonstrate it for you. In announcement letter 313-031, IBM said that it was chopping prices for disk drives and flash drives used in both the Storwize V7000 disk array and in the FlexSystem V7000 enclosure that slides into the FlexSystem modular chassis announced last year. The price cuts range from 9.5 percent to 22.3 percent, depending on the device. But as you can see below, the pricing is not the same between the two enclosures, which are virtually identical like AS/400s and RS/6000s in days gone by. Take a look:
As you can see, the price cuts are roughly the same for equivalent disks or flashes, but as I had not realized until I saw them side-by-side, IBM is charging significantly less for the storage devices in the V7000 when it is embedded in the FlexSystem chassis than for the external Storwize V7000 enclosure. We are talking on the order of 42 percent cheaper for the FlexSystem variant of essentially the same disk drives. I know, I am having flashbacks, too. And it ain’t because I took too much of the brown acid, either. FYI: IBM Canada cut prices on the same features, which you can see in announcement letter C313-021.
