Big Blue Chops DB2 Web Query, Jacks BRMS and Fax Server Prices
October 18, 2010 Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM last week slashed selected charges on its DB2 Web Query development kit support charges and jacked up prices on its Backup Restore and Media Services and integrated fax server for the IBM i platform. The price changes, which you can see in announcement letter 310-270, were not across the board for DB2 Web Query, but were selective for various features and nonetheless consistent at a 50 percent chop on the price. IBM cut one year of support on the DB2 Web Query development kit to $116 and chopped the after license charge (the fee Big Blue slaps on you if your product goes off maintenance to get it current) to $2,500 for one year and to $4,200 for three years. Prices on the DB2 Web Query Report Broker were sliced down to $5,000. Those using Backup Recovery and Media Services (BRMS) didn’t fare so well. Price hikes were announced for BRMS 5.04.0 (5722-BR1), BRMS 6.01 (5761-BR1), BRMS 7.01 (5770-BR1). The price changes range from 20 percent to 150 percent, depending on the features, which you can see below:
It would take a month of Sundays to go through all of those BRMS versions and features to figure out what they are, since IBM’s sales manual doesn’t put features in for this software any more. (I just don’t have time to do IBM’s job this week, sorry.) As you can see from the bottom of the table, IBM has also doubled the price of the integrated fax server in the IBM i platform (that’s product number 5798-FAX, of course). Now you’ll pay anywhere from $420 to $4,000 to receive faxes on your Power Systems server. The price changes went into effect as of October 12.
